BRAKE SETUP
See diagram at right for reference numbers.
1. Attach Locking
Handle 10 to Handle Post 11 by inserting Fast Pins 12 through
holes in side of Handle.
2. Attach Bending Handle also 10, to
Front Hinge Handle Post 11 by inserting Fast Pins through holes in
side of that handle. You are now ready to lock and bend.
MAINTENANCE
1. Protect working edges and surfaces from scratches, nicks or
gouges.
2. Periodically check parts and hardware for wear, tight-
en as needed.
3. To ensure material surfaces stay scratch and mar
free, inspect clamping surface of F Bar 2 and Rear Hinge 4 for nicks
and/or debris. This cleaning operation takes only a few seconds and
should be done at least once a day.
4. With the fewest moving parts
of all portable brakes, no lubrication is necessary.
TRANSPORTING
1. When transporting your brake, keep it in an unlocked, open
position or insert cardboard or another type of cushioning
material between F-Bar 2 and Rear Hinge 4. This will prevent
nicks and marks, which could mar the material.
2. During all
stages of use and transportation, ensure your brake is level and
evenly supported to prevent warping.
ADJUSTMENT
NOTE: Your Mark IV has been pre-adjusted at the Factory for even locking pressure at each casting. However, due to Nylon Wedge wear and/or a wide range of material thicknesses, it may be necessary to readjust lock pressure. Proceed as follows:
1. Cut scrap material to be used into approximately 2" square test pieces. All test pieces must be of the same thickness and one piece is required for each Casting 20. 2. Unlock brake by pulling Lock Handle 10 towards operator. 3. Insert one inch of the test piece into the brake at each Casting and lock brake. NOTE: Brake is properly locked when flat surface of Locking Cam 15 is at rest against slope of Nylon Wedge 16, located on top of Pivot Arm 19. 4. Try to pull each test piece straight out and determine through feel whether each piece is held with equal pressure. 5. If you can pull a test piece out, that Casting requires adjustment. Follow next Step. 6. CASTING ADJUSTMENT: Unlock brake, loosen Screw 16a that secures Wedge 16 to Pivot Arm 19 and slide Wedge towards back of brake in 1/8" increments until desired locking pressure is achieved. Re-test, follow steps 2-4. 7. If Wedges are worn and adjustments cannot be obtained, replace all Wedges. 8. If brake is properly adjusted and material continues to slip, material is beyond the brake capacity. Try thinner material, different alloy, or different temper.
OPERATION
Techniques and examples explained are not intended to be fully-comprehensive or definitive. The best method depends on the specific construction of the building worked on, the brand and type of material used, and the particular skills of the applicator. We recommend using scrap material to practice with until satisfied with results.
BASIC BENDING
1. Mark both ends of material where you want to place a bend (using pencil, punch or snips). 2. Insert material in brake and align marks with edge of Stainless Steel Strip 7. Lock brake by pushing Lock Handle 10 all the way to the stop position. 3. Bend to desired angle in one continuous, smooth motion. NOTE: During bend, hold Bending Handle equal distance from ends of Handle (for best results, always try to center piece in brake and therefore bend and lock brake grasping the center of handles).

Note: The shapes shown are based on common profiles used on many job sites. The exact measurements of each bend may vary from job to job, trim piece to trim piece. Where applicable, the above shapes can be enhanced aesthetically, or structurally, using TrimFormer Portable Roll Forming Tool which will significantly increase the "curb appeal" of all your work.
